MYKONOS

Explore with an Expert
This afternoon, meet your private driver for a transfer to the starting point of your walking tour of Mykonos. With a private guide, stroll along the seafront, past the local fish and vegetable market. Keep your eyes peeled for the island’s cheerful avian mascot, Peter the Pelican. Visit the antique-filled Folklore Museum, situated in a charming 11th-century house on your way to Papaportiani Church. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Church is a famous example of Cycladic architecture and is one of the most photographed spots in the Mediterranean. From here, continue onwards to the picturesque area of Alefkandra, known as the “Little Venice” of Mykonos. The gorgeous old houses are perched precariously on the edge of the sea, and the neighborhood is a popular area for local artists to set up their workshops. By the harbor, the iconic windmills stand guard facing the north, and offer a strikingly beautiful photographic opportunity. The windmills were used in the past to grind wheat, and provide a scenic vista overlooking Little Venice and the sea below. From here, continue to the House of Lena Museum, a great example of 19th century middle-class Mykonian life. End the afternoon with a stop at a local tavern for a sampling of Greek “meze”, including various traditional Greek dips and olives, feta cheese, and tomatoes. Enjoy a wine tasting with your guide, and learn about the history and terroir of Greek wines. Conclude your tour with a return transfer to your hotel.

Reputed to be the legendary birthplace of the twin gods, Apollo and Artemis, the remains of temples and residences on Delos range in age from the Neolithic to Roman periods.

Explore the remains of the Temple of Apollo, the Sanctuary of Artemis, the Old City, the Theatre Quarter, and stroll along the Terrace of lions. PAROS

Along Cobblestone Streets
Setting out by private transportation to the port, you’ll take a short public ferry to the island of Antiparos which is located southwest of Paros. Upon arrival, join your private guide on a walking tour of Antiparos. Stroll through quaint streets, and admire the island’s small Venetian Fortress, an example of the fortified settlements established in the Cyclades during the Latin period of the 13th-16th centuries. Its construction dates to the mid-15th century when the Venetian Giovanni Loredano decided to marry Mary Sommaripa of Antiparos. Continue with a visit to the most famous sight of the island – its Cave. This interesting natural wonder is full of stalactites and stalagmites which form different shapes. As findings from the Geometric and Classical Era have shown, it was initially used as a refuge and then as worship place. Macedonian generals also used the cave in the 4th century B.C. as a refuge after their conspiracy against Alexander the Great. At the end of the tour take a ferry back to the Paros Island.

Meet with your private guide and driver and head into the Santorini countryside to discover the island’s picturesque villages. Start with a visit to Mesa Gonia, a village of rolling vineyards and a major wine producing region. The village is home to some majestic Byzantine churches. Continue to Pyrgos, a hilltop town that served as the island’s capital until the early 19th century. The village offers panoramic views of the island in every direction and has charming medieval architecture. Continue your evening with a visit to the village of Oia, set upon the caldera’s cliffs. Oia marks the dramatic backdrop to a world-famous sunset. Its narrow passageways throng with people each evening to catch a glimpse of the sun going down. Greece has a rich culinary tradition dating back to antiquity – a healthy and delicious Mediterranean diet influenced by the region’s bountiful harvest. Begin exploring on Athinas Street in the city center, not far from the Monastiraki train station – an intoxicating, crowded part of town famous for its housewares stores. Meander through the neighborhood, passing bakeries, cheesemongers and spice shops. Stroll through the Varvakios Central Market, where nut vendors vie with butchers and fishmongers in a heady, excited atmosphere for the attention of passersby. Walk through the fresh meat and fish markets to learn about the various uses of meat and seafood in Greek food, right down to the animals’ innards. This will be a noticeable contrast from North American butchers and fishmongers. You may also walk through one of the market restaurants to get a glimpse of local fare in its least “manicured” state. Exiting the market, head to the historical Plaka area and flea market in Monastiraki and explore the narrow picturesque streets and the old city.
